Parents of Trans & Nonbinary Youth

When your child came out to you as trans, you knew you wanted to be supportive but you aren’t always sure what that looks like.

Your mind is still swirling with logistical questions, but you don’t know what’s appropriate to ask your kid. What does this mean? Do they need a doctor’s appointment? What are the steps? What am I supposed to help with? What am I allowed to ask my child about their body? Am I being invasive or insensitive?

At the same time, you have a lot of emotions of your own and you’re terrified of saying the wrong thing and alienating your child. Maybe your child wants to try out a new name and you know it’s empowering for them, but part of you feels sad that they’re leaving behind the name you put some much thought and care into choosing for them. You always dreamed of walking your daughter down the aisle someday and you’ve never parented a son before. You find yourself wondering… what if your child medically transitions and ends up regretting some of their decisions? How will transitioning affect your kid’s safety out in the world? How will you explain this to your friends? What if my coparent isn’t on the same page about how we want to support our kid?

Individual or couples therapy can be a great way to explore these concerns and feelings so you can show up for yourself and your child authentically and compassionately. Working with a nonbinary therapist can also be a great place to ask all of your questions and get connected to support and resources in a warm, affirming environment.
